8 Days Route Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

Arrival in Moshi

  • Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) near Moshi, the starting point for most Kilimanjaro climbs.
  • Complete any necessary paperwork and park registration with your trekking company.
  • Relax and unwind at your hotel in Moshi.

Moshi to Umbwe Gate (1,640m) - Umbwe Cave Camp (2,940m)

  • Drive from Moshi to Umbwe Gate, the starting point for the challenging Umbwe Route.
  • Embark on a steep ascent through a dense rainforest with towering trees and rich undergrowth.
  • The trail narrows and becomes increasingly challenging as you gain elevation.
  • Arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp, a unique campsite nestled among rocks and trees, for dinner and overnight stay.

Umbwe Cave Camp (2,940m) - Barranco Camp (3,920m)

  • The terrain transitions to rockier slopes with sparse vegetation and moss-covered trees.
  • Enjoy glimpses of Kilimanjaro’s majesty as you ascend.
  • The path flattens out as you approach Barranco Valley, offering a brief respite.
  • Descend through the fascinating Senecio Forest with its unusual giant groundsels before reaching Barranco Camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Barranco Camp (3,920m) - Karanga Camp (3,950m)

  • Today’s hike involves a demanding descent into a ravine, followed by a steep climb up the Great Barranco Wall.
  • This section requires good physical condition and sure footing.
  • Navigate through a series of hills and valleys with breathtaking views before reaching Karanga Valley.
  • Ascend one final steep section to reach Karanga Camp, a smaller camp with fewer crowds, for dinner and overnight stay.

Karanga Camp (3,950m) - Barafu Camp (4,600m)

  • The route traverses a series of ridges with stunning vistas of the surrounding mountains.
  • This section may involve some scrambling over loose scree, requiring caution and good balance.
  • Arrive at Barafu Camp, situated on a desolate plateau near the Kibo Crater rim, for a pre-summit briefing, dinner, and a very early night’s rest.

Barafu Camp (4,600m) - Uhuru Peak (5,895m) - Mweka Camp (3,100m)

  • Undertake the pre-dawn summit push, the most challenging part of the trek, towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
  • Witness the spectacular sunrise paint the sky with vibrant colors (weather permitting).
  • Savor the accomplishment of reaching the “Roof of Africa” and enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views.
  • Descend back to Barafu Camp for breakfast and a short rest.
  • Descend a well-maintained trail through lower slopes and rainforest to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Mweka Camp (3,100m) - Mweka Gate (1,640m) - Moshi

  • Hike down a well-maintained trail through the rainforest, retracing your steps from the ascent.
  • Celebrate your remarkable achievement at Mweka Gate with your fellow trekkers and crew.
  • Enjoy a relaxing drive back to Moshi for a celebratory meal and overnight stay.

Depature Day

  • Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your hotel and reflect on your incredible Kilimanjaro adventure.
  • Depending on your flight schedule, explore Moshi town or indulge in some souvenir shopping.
  • Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight.
